Disclaimer: I wouldn't consider this naming and shaming since he's literally the most famous Scratcher. Feel free to remove this or let me know if you disagree, ST.

Recently, griffpatch made a new account @griffpatch-academy which is his new course about using Scratch. He doesn't link to it on Scratch, but his course costs $7. He's advertising his YouTube video about it everywhere, and it's obvious this is a marketing scheme to make money.

So how come it hasn't been taken down?

I know I could use contact us to report it, but I'm not interested in doing that. I want to know why this specifically is allowed.

Critique for squeak (this piece!)

Hi! This story was amazing, so thank you for allowing me to critique. I loved the format of your story and how it flowed from one journal entry to the next. The concept was so original and exciting, and I loved reading it. I could see the concept turning into a novel that I’d definitely want to read hehe. The whole story was so creative and interesting to read, and I can tell you’re an amazing writer. Great job!

In terms of constructive feedback, the main thing I noticed was the ending. As it stands now, it seems a little rushed and abrupt, and it also feels a little bit passive. Since so much happened in that sequence, it would have been helpful to flesh it out a little bit more, since as it is now it just seems like you were trying to wrap the story up quickly. (Understandable, given the time constraints lol). If you described the ending as if you were there and not just telling what happened, the ending would have been a lot more gripping and exciting, if that makes sense. I liked the way you did your June 27th entry, where you described it in detail, so maybe editing the ending to be more like that would be helpful.

Another thing I wanted was a little more background. I don’t know anything about the character’s relationships and life before they were thrown into the Urbs Arcanem (I like that name a lot since I take Latin hehe), so maybe fleshing out the character’s home life, family, and relationship with Owen before the story started would make it more compelling. I would especially like to see the background of Owen and Andromeda’s friendship!

Anyways, that’s really all that I can think of right now. I hope this was helpful! I loved reading your story, so thank you for letting me critique! <33

I apologize as this is a bit late, but for the april event could we do a help center for writing? Maybe people could ask for critique, help with their story, ideas, etc.?

That might be cool. Maybe though it could be called a Writing Exchange Event? Ask for critique and critique someone else's? I just think that for people to actually participate and critique, it would need to be considered more of a trade. Otherwise, people might just drop off their story and go.
Yep, that sounds good, but maybe also to make it a bit different from SWC's critiquaire, we could not only limit it to writing critiques, maybe also help with ideas and other writing-related things?

Yeah, that sounds good!

I don't think the Scratch Team is going to add this, and it may be rejected under similar grounds to the one linked above.

It's a fundamental part of the Scratch website that users can look inside a project and experiment with different things and see what they do in order to learn how to code.

No “real” cheating would happen here since it's all local. If you're worried about a user getting a certain save code or something, they could already remix the project and do this - this really wouldn't do anything other then make it more annoying for users to experiment with code.

… it's always been a tradition about having the AFD post made on the forums,

It may be understandable that you see it as a tradition since you joined fairly recently, but in actuality, AFD never was an established forum tradition after 2.0.

During the 1.x days when the site used different forum software, it was strictly up to the forum moderators to decorate the forum to match with the main site AFD theme (e.g. Neigh Pony), and then after the forum software changed for 2.0 it was strictly a “main website” affair only. AFD as a forum spammage phenomenon only sprang up in the past few years, particularly spurred on by COVID when more people were online and feeling really bored due to seclusion.

Someone already posted a link to where I had explained earlier how the AFD forum spammage phenomenon fast-tracked forum degradation (I actually wanted to quash the year earlier, but got overruled) but needless to say, it's definitely not gonna be a thing anymore, even if we do switch forum software, since forum spammage on that level kills forums over time.

Now if you really want to indulge in true AFD tradition, you'd just have to wait until the official AFD studio comes out and submit a project based on whatever theme the ST has chosen for that year. This is a programming website after all.

overall, i loved this piece. i love the character, sam, and the mysterious vibe that the story captures. you did a great job with it!

“ … my name is Sam, and I guess I’ve always found solace in the hum or circuits and the glow of LED lights.”
i really love the first paragraph and how descriptive it is, especially this nice character introduction. it’s basically the definition of short and sweet, and paints a nice picture in the reader’s head of what sam is like.

in the third paragraph, i absolutely LOVE how you describe his father’s radio, and in the following paragraph it’s super nice as well <3

“ As I ran my fingers over the worn dials and faded buttons, a flood of memories came rushing back - memories of lazy Sunday afternoons spent listening to crackling broadcasts from distant lands, of my father’s gentle smile as he showed me how to tune in to the frequencies of the world beyond our doorstep.”
in the brackets, i added ‘and’, which i think makes the sentence flow a bit better. since the sentence isn’t a list of 3+ things, i think the ‘and’ is more correct.

“Two years since he has been missing and unlike what everyone tells me, every day seems to hurt even more.”
the flow of this sentence seems off to me. a good start to making it flow better might be to add “than the last” at the end of the sentence. i think if you modify the start of the sentence a little bit, it will flow more smoothly, and make a bit more sense to the reader. for example, changing it to something like this, “It’s been two years since he went missing, and unlike what everyone tells me, each day seems to hurt more than the last.” this is mainly just personal preference, and i could see how this works for you, and how other readers might not have a problem understanding it.

i feel super repetitive but this piece, besides a few small preference errors, is absolutely stunninggg <33 paragraph five is so incredible to me and i love the emotion behind it!

“Nervous yet excited, I accepted the invitation …”
another personal preference thing, a comma after nervous makes it more flowy for me haha

“And though I couldn’t fully comprehend the magnitude of his words at the time, something deep within me stirred, a sense of destiny unfolding me before my very eyes.”
i love this ahhh

“With the guidance of Dr. Reyes and the support Sarah and Marcus …”
just a small error, i believe there should be an ‘of’ between support and Sarah <3

STOP THE CLIFFHANGER NOOOO ADSHFKS
this piece is so beautifully crafted, and other than a few small preference things, i love how it turned out! i think it might make a bigger impact if you give Sam more ‘emotion’ i guess? he feels almost like a robot, and other than the few times you mentioned his father and how he connects with him, i think it might be good to add more of how he feels throughout the story <3 overall, this is such a good piece and i love the plot <3 thanks for letting me critique it ;D

I have a lot of OCs, so I won’t list them all, but some OCs I made in 2023 (originally as dragon puppets) were two dragons: Phoenix and Emerald. They’re both of a species that I made up. Phoenix looks like a very big dog with horns and wings, and Emerald is a green nature dragon! They’re both main characters of my book, Stars, and… I think that’s all I have to say!
You have to re-share and then I can double check it. But, the thing that I looked at, what happens is, the sprite moves in a big area like a platformer, right? But the screen does not. So the sprite just stays at the top/left/right of the screen until it goes back to the main screen that everyone sees. Re-share, and I can make a remix of it, post it here, and I'll put a background and objects in it so you see what I mean.

I wouldn't say that it necessarily causes drama. It's not allowed to communicate extensively on behalf of a banned Scratcher, even if the content of such messages does not cause drama.

critique for ap0l0

Wow. That was a rollercoaster haha-
I’ve been a reader of your work for some years now, and your way with words is always so poetic and enticing, May! I love how well you tapped into the emotions of your characters, and this piece was really good! <3
I like the little parts in between as well where you jumped between the past and the present, really nice addition!
My critique is more on the grammar and syntax, (and reading back, I hope this isn’t too nit-picky :’D), but with that being said, here’s my critique! :

“Snow held us captive, our breaths shuddering in the winter air” sounds better to me than “shuddering in winter air” personally

“But sorrow lingered in their eyes just a little too long.” Being a bit nit-picky, but I think the ‘just’ isn’t needed!

“Setting the world aflame” could be inspiration for the title :0 It sounds so poetic haha!

“A match lit in Adair's chest; resentment laced his words when he said, "But this is his home.”” I feel like this sentence could be restructured a little; perhaps “A match lit in Adair’s chest. *new line* “But this is his home,” he said, resentment lacing his words/his words laced with resentment.” Something of the like, it doesn’t have to be exactly that—the pacing of the sentence just feels a bit odd.

The paragraph from “Adair’s mother broke it first” to “A home that let him fall” could be reworded a bit as well. I think if you moved some sentences around a bit it would flow better, like (again, just an example):
“This was a home that failed your Papa, that didn't keep him safe.”
Her voice shook, the shudder of someone at the edge, looking down.
At the edge of this stilted normality, this pretence of everything is fine, don't worry; of Papa passed away, it's not important how. This act that had spanned Adair’s whole life, since the day his father died.
A sob broke through when she murmured, “A home that let him fall.”
I feel like it makes a bit more sense, if that makes sense!

“Muffled footsteps sounded against the stairs, and Adair greeted his mother with a beaming grin.” This part is a bit confusing to me- was Adair going up the stairs or his mother coming down?

“rubbing muddied hands against his trousers, and wiping sweat from his brow” I personally don’t think you need the c0mma (forums doesn't want me writing it normally for some reason :')) after ‘trousers’!

“Muffled footsteps sounded against the stairs, and Adair greeted his mother with a beaming grin.” This part is a bit confusing to me- was Adair going up the stairs or his mother coming down?

“Her silence spoke multitudes” can I just say, I love that sentence! :0

“Rage coiled Adair's heart like a barbed wire” This one too, ahh, your writing is so good!

I feel like having the ‘Adair started.’ slows down the pace a bit, so removing it would make it flow better into the “Don’t you dare!” part if that makes sense!

“lips pulling into a grin that even the sun could not rival” I’m just fangirling at your way of words at this point—bahaha, love this sentence as well

“A voice that made him open his eyes, look up into his mother's face” I think adding an ‘and’ between ‘eyes’ and ‘look’ instead of a comma would help the sentence flow better.

‘Making sure' instead of ‘made’ sure also would have the same effect in my opinion!

The ending ahhh-
Overall, this is great! I’m happy you chose not to k!ll him off hehe I hope this critique somewhat helped, and thank you for critiquing mine! <33

when you leave the game, how can I know you left and remove your name from the active players list?

Please help!!! Very urgent.

Thanks
You would have to make cloud encoding and decoding. There are many examples of this but the main part of it is just turning letters into numbers. Best way to do this is have a list called letters and starting at 10 add all of the letters you want. Max length would be 99 though. Then to encoding it just fetch a letter from what you want encoded, find that letter in the list, and add it to a temporary variable and repeat this for the entire phrase you want encoded.

Hope this helps!

people have a right to privacy, if you have a bad project accidentally break a rule, you also dont want people to see that, right?
I don't think you understand that this isn't your website.

When you use this website then you are agreeing to this.

If you can't deal with this, then Scratch is not the place for you.

To be clear, the Scratch Team will never punish you for your unshared or deleted projects unless the are illegal or were shared at one point.

So if you create a project with swearing, but never share it, it's fine.
Hello. I'm creating a multiplayer chess game. Now i'm still developing the game pairing section. Now I want to show which players are online.
Like these players are online.

1.Griffpatch
2.Hiruja
3.Beluga
4.JohnDoe

Then someone starts a game. So then the script chooses pick random 1-4 and select Hiruja. Then the game continue as the rest.

What I have done is, when you click the green flag. It adds your name to active players list (it's a cloud list) then pairs you with others, The problem I have is
when you leave the game, how can I know you left and remove your name from the active players list?

Please help!!! Very urgent.

Thanks

Correct, you do not have any privacy on a website that you do not own.
but other websites like (Removed, although this wasnt an ad, dont want ANOTHER mute) dont know that.
Well that's a different website.
so?
Scratch doesn't have to be a carbon copy of every other website.
