Storage Box - Reworked Backpack

Originally wrote:

1. Why “Asset Storage”
The current name, “backpack” is undescriptive of the usage, the only similarly that the word “backpack” and the backpack are that they both store items. The name “asset storage” is far more descriptive. How? What is stored in the backpack? Assets. Assets are stored in the asset storage. Why does it need to be Descriptive? Because the backpack is not commonly discussed, and the first time Scratchers see it, they will most likely see the name.

2. How would it be different?
It would occupy more space than the current backpack and scroll vertically, it would also resemble the costume library.
It would have a different method of selection and deletion of items from the asset storage, buttons in the corner of the selected sprite will be used. The asset storage could also store individual scripts. On clicking the add asset button, the asset storage window would close and you would be able to select a sprite to place the costume or music file, for sprites, they would be added to the project instantly, without closing the asset storage window. As for the scripts feature, the name of the script in the backpack could be : 1. Custom selected, with an optional “name this script” popup window. Or 2. The name would be the name of the first block in the script. The second one is more likely to be added, as well as being the default if the script is not named.

3. What Would It Improve?
The current backpack is hard to navigate and use, the asset storage would fix this. The larger size would make it easier to navigate and use. As stated above, “backpack” is undescriptive, the asset storage would fix this too.

4. What Would It Look Like

Note : There is a suggestion suggesting a backpack resize, this is suggesting an full reworking, it is not a duplicate.
Note2 : The name may remain backpack depending on the ST's choice.

backpack was meant to be easy to understand. Assets, would be, definitely more confusing than backpack.

The backpack just stores assets? You may have understood it wrong… It is far more easy to understand with a new name, as some scratchers may think a backpack is something else.

it's a resize with cdelete and rename
Yes, because 8 year olds will most definitely understand “asset storage” better than backpack.

No support.

only because of that??
Perhaps it could still be named backpack but have all of the other features you mention? although I like the name asset storage I feel like it would be less confusing for younger users if it was just backpack
I support, just keep the name “backpack.” Could there at least be tabs to organize (that say stuff like Scripts, sprites costumes, all) it though?

edit: found a topic for the tabs in backpack though

I'm pretty sure it was called “Backpack” to act as a metaphor, like how “folders” are a metaphor for folders in an office cabinet, and how a “desktop” is a metaphor for your table. A backpack is something most people are familiar with, and relates a lot to Scratch's asset backpack, with how you can keep stuff in it and take it wherever. Not everyone is going to understand what an asset is (and no, it shouldn't have to be Googled) or where this “asset storage” can be used, so “backpack” is a more familiar term to use, given nearly everyone using Scratch is/were a school student. I think a better way to familiarize Scratchers with the backpack rather than calling it “asset storage” would be to give some visual indicators for first-time users with pointy arrows and stuff, but I'm waffling at this point so goodbye
I don't support #1 (as others have pointed out, a lot of people don't know what assets are), but #2 sounds really good.

Maybe to avoid confusion over the name “backpack”, there could be something like this suggestion?

only because of that??
It's a legitimate reason and one that the Scratch Team would likely consider heavily. It makes sense: you put things into a backpack, then you take them out of the backpack when you want to use them later.

Exactly. Plus, I do like the idea of an expanded backpack but the name kinda cuts the deal for me. “backpack” is a more fun and easy to understand term, and it’s like, “less serious” in a way that it’s more interesting for kids.

Maybe ‘extended backpack’ would be better

It doesn’t need a new name.

bro kept avoiding the questions
But 1 isn’t good, at all. Why do we call a web page that’s opened on a browser a “tab”? Because it works partly like one. We call this “backpack” because we store stuff in it, more like a hiking backpack.
2 actually makes the thing more organized, but tbh, this suggestion is gonna fail, purely because of the name. Scratch team wants everything easy to understand, you think 8 year olds are gonna understand what “assets” are?
Ehh. Storage Box makes a bit more sense but backpack is still better for scratch imo
I don’t know, backpack is pretty intuitive. I don’t see the disconnect here.
No support from meesa

Didn’t answer the concern.

Look, honestly this suggestion would probably get a bad impression from ST if it’s called “storage box” or “asset storage” or idk anymore “refrigerator”, just because backpack is a better understood term to kids.

Backpack is fine honestly.
what's wrong with backpack? why not keep the name but keep the rest of this suggestion?

Exactly my point, I think it’s cuz this might be a dupe without the name change? Idk

A different reworking, with many differences. don't forget the rename

Even if is doing that it's still a duplicate fore example, this suggestion is still suggesting two similar things but if one topic suggests one of those things it's still marked a dupelicate

you could keep this topic just for the rename though
This is a great idea, but a couple of issues need to be addressed. What about keeping the name and current backpack, but adding a button that opens a larger pane which includes more options like the one you described?

It suggests some things that are completely different. The rename makes it different.

As someone who has flooded their backpack with sprites and cant find old items at all, i think adding a search bar would be a good suggestion, Either way I support, this would be a massive quality of life increase
josueart josueart loading
I love the rework on the UI, I personally think it looks way better. The rename option is also useful since most scripts are just called code and you can't rename them without browser extensions. As epicdude512 mentioned, a search bar would be cool. So support.

btw there's no need on making the OP in that color, it messes up the readability for people with dark mode

Support, but i think adding a search bar to search through your assets would be helpful with your idea (Storage Box).
