Welcome to the topic for the fifth Scratching the Surface server! Discuss the server here. Scratching the Surface is a Minecraft SMP originally started by ScratchCatBoo. The topic for the previous server can be found here.

If you would like to join, please make a post with your Minecraft username and edition (Java or Bedrock) so an operator can whitelist you. Please don’t ask on my profile. If your post goes unnoticed, just bump it.

The IP is the same for both Java and Bedrock.

If you die due to lag, I cannot rollback your inventory, sorry.

Server Rules
Important Rules:

Do not do anything which would not be allowed on Scratch.
Do not intentionally grief or steal other players' builds, items, mobs, etc.
Do not intentionally prevent others from playing the game.

Breaking any of these rules will result in a 2+ week ban.

General Rules:

Do not PVP without permission from all participants.
No lava casts.
No duping.
Do not intentionally spam chat.
Use common sense! Just because something is not on the list does not mean it should be done.

Breaking any of the above rules may result in a 1+ week ban.

Client Mods:
Please do not use client mods which are generally considered to be hacks. This includes but is not limited to mods/resource packs which: manipulate your movement, provide x-ray abilities, or give an unfair advantage in PVP. If you are using a mod, it should not affect other players.

Using disallowed mods may result in a 1+ week ban.

Server Mods
The server runs on Fabric, which has better performance than Vanilla. We also use a few server side mods for things like preventing griefing and improving performance. These are all open for discussion!

Ledger is a logging tool which keeps track of things like broken blocks, items removed from chests, mobs killed, etc. If a griefer joins the server and destroys something, we can use Ledger to figure out who the griefer was and restore the destruction, at least partially.

Carpet is a tool which has many features which can be used to tweak the game. Currently, it is being used for performance monitoring and adding a few custom commands. On Java, you should see a TPS and MSPT monitor in your tab menu screen.

Lithium is a overall performance improvement for Fabric, and Phosphor is a light engine performance improvement.

Geyser and Floodgate are used to allow Bedrock players to join the Java server. They add a few commands which are listed further down.

BanHammer is a tool which lets moderators /tempban rather than needing to remember to unban at a later date.

There are few other Fabric mods which are needed to use the above tools. The Fabric API is used by most Fabric mods and Fabric Language Kotlin is used by Ledger.

We also use a few Datapacks. Currently, we are using AFK Display, Silence Mobs, More Mob Heads, Player Head Drops, and Wandering Trades Mini Blocks from Vanilla Tweaks. Adding more is open to discussion!

Custom Commands
There a few custom commands on the server. Some of them are added by mods, while others are created using the carpet mod.

/maxview - Higher render distances can cause some players to get kicked. Sets a max render distance when you are online.
/plag - Counts how many entities are nearby each player so you can see who is causing lag.
/afk - Allows you afk without running your computer but may kick you if the server lags.
/stat - Used for the mystery statistic game. Shows a statistic in the player list.
/geyser - Contains several commands useful for Bedrock players.
/fwhitelist - Moderators can use this to whitelist Bedrock players.

If you have both a Java account and a Bedrock account, you can link your accounts together so you can switch between devices. Follow the instructions for Floodgate Global Linking here.

Mystery Statistic
There is a mystery statistic in the player list. The first person to guess what the statistic is and post on the topic or have verified by the previous guesser can pick the next one. The statistic will be revealed if nobody guesses after 1 week.

Previous Events

Dragon Fight - November 19th & 26th, 2022
We disabled the end so that the community could have a dragon fight all at the same time. The end is now open for anyone to fight the dragon. We plan to have another dragon fight on November 26th.

Server Launch - October 16th, 2022
The server was launched after Minehut wiped the world for STS4 by mistake. The new server is hosted on a free Oracle cloud instance and the world is periodically backed up.

Public nether portal at X -154 Z -203! (by the village)

Edit: I've also made a public cow farm nearby too, just remember to breed more cows please. So far the server seems pretty good. There's some lag spikes here and there but for the most part it's smooth, definitely better than Minehut. (and to be fair, it has twice the render distance!) The nether spawn is a warped forest and there's a nether fortress nearby too but I haven't gone to it since it's across a lava lake.

You can't build EOL farms any more, they removed update suppression.
As for void trading, the end is disabled until 1.20

The border goes from 10,000 10,000 to -2,000, -2,000 so that when 1.20 comes we have at most ~2,000 blocks to go for the new chunks. We could potentially extend the border if it is in your way but I’d like to hear what other people say.

I’ve seen some update suppressors still work.
I actually just use tnt for getting netherite, more efficient and less dangerous

What I’m hoping for is some actual lore or stories on the server than some random building

Could the eye of ender crafting recipe be enabled? I want to make an ender chest.

Instead, we could have a script to kill anyone who goes through the portal to keep the end disabled.

Yes, I plan to write the script and enable the recipe as soon as I have some time. At the latest, I should be able to do it Friday or this weekend.

i just entered a portal because a villager went in and when u spawned a major lag spike on my end happened and by the time it fixed I died from a ghost which means I lost all my stuff to the fire. I had loads of materials for an iron farm on me

everything was burned. it's fine though It'll probably take an hour at most to get everything back

I think you should get CoreProtect
and enforceWhitelist

CoreProtect doesn’t work on Fabric, but even if it did, the last time I used it you couldn’t rollback inventories with it. We have Ledger instead, which works similarly to CoreProtect.

I believe enforce whitelist is already on in the server properties. Can anyone join currently?
