i'm really looking forward to it. i've always hated windows 10 for being a horrible buggy mess with inconsistent design, and pushing the microsoft store in your face, but it does what i want and it works (most of the time, at least), it's nice to see that microsoft actually care about their os and their userbase for once.

I must agree- I switched to a Chromebook a few years back because of how horrible Windows 10 was. I must say, I am hoping that this will really be Windows 11/a new Windows installation, though I know my mom is gonna be annoyed and confused lol

Hmm, if they're abandoning 10X then presumably Windows will be made more tablet-like to unify both their folding Windows thing and desktops

Anyway it's a feature update for windows 10 not a big thing perhaps or maybe a final windows called Windows not like Windows Xp, Windows 7 or 10.

Maybe not a version bump, but it does have a name like macOS BigSur had: “Sun Valley”

Not likely to be a final windows. I thought that windows 10 would become a service-type system (no new operating system versions coming out, except updates). Now, It looks like they may be releasing a new version of windows. Presumably, Windows 11 or 12.

Or they will just abandon version numbers.

In my opinion, its too early for that. A fair number of people use Windows 7, and then download pages are going to be very confusing (unless they use UA strings to determine correct dowloads)
Example:

(i hope you understand I was referring to “softwear” on purpose… XP styled software that microsoft sold. Do you get it now?)

the thing im worried about is, since they're dropping 10X, 11 will be more tablet friendly then, which i dont want because of how bad it was on Windows 8 , but anyways im hyped!!

edit: windows 8 is terrible!

Windows 8 wasn't bad…. it was terrible

But the sad part was that they spent a lot of time making Windows 10X - and it never shipped. Such a waste of time and resources

Ok sorry, I edited my post, in fact Windows 8 was worser than Windows 7!! Windows 7 is one of the best versions of Windows imo. (vista is bad as well)
yeah it's sad to see 10X go away ….

[opinion]
Windows Vista was very similar to Windows 7 - but it was too early for its time and wasn't done well. With Windows 7, they fixed everything wrong with Vista and it exploded in popularity! I don't remember using Windows 7 a lot - but I remember using Windows 8

Also, I hope this isn't another big mistake like Windows 8.

Chiroyce wrote:

I couldn't even test it out in a VM because it needed Hyper-V which was only included in Windows 10 Pro. Honestly speaking, I just wish they stopped with the “Pro” and "Home' versions for good. Its very annoying to see an awesome feature available only to Pro users

I also wish they completely removed the Control Panel. You don't need two apps for the same thing. Also, there are a lot of legacy stuff which have been in Windows for more than 20 years! Its time these things got replaced by more modern solutions. It also needs to be more developer friendly

@9gr, I think the verge article in the OP is too short

Also, it kinda seems Advanced Topics should be in the “Interests Beyond Scratch” because it is way beyond scratch and such topics look offtopic

I feel like the announced updates will be for Windows 10 rather than a new Windows 11, introducing a new design system to its existing delectable selection of styles across its app, with some cool new features

If there were to be a Windows 11 with a revolutionary new design for Windows, it would probably as successful and popular as Windows Vista or Windows 8 (ie, not very good) until Microsoft releases Windows 12, which'll be Windows 11 but better (as happened with Windows 10 and Windows 7). However, I feel like making consumers update to a completely new Windows version during a pandemic is a costly and overall bad idea

Windows 10 is already somewhat meant to be tablet friendly since it has tablet mode, albeit it's rather janky

Every other Windows version is reviewed horribly upon release(98 good, Me rushed, XP good, Vista ahead of its time, 7 good, 8 ABYSMAL, 10 good, 11/12 bad?). Since they scrapped Windows 10X I feel like Windows 11/12 is just going to be a tablet OS lazily ported over for desktops and laptops.
Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 will always be the best versions of Windows IMO.

They need to just make a entire separate OS for tablets-

Agreed. Vista and 7 had good features, but lacked all the adware and bloatware of 10.

Microsoft should've pulled an Apple and named Windows 10 Windows X.

I agree. Windows needs to be desktop/laptop oriented again. They should also make Windows for ARM available for retail.

It seems like a pain to have to support two separate operating systems when they could just unify them. Otherwise one OS might get a cool new feature first and people'll complain about why the other OS doesn't have it, etc., and apps would have to be written for both operating systems instead of just one

Sometimes I use tablet mode so I can maximise desk space for a notebook by chucking away the keyboard, but Windows 10's touchscreen experience, especially its on-screen keyboard, is somewhat janky, so hopefully they will improve tablet mode whilst avoiding hampering the desktop experience

Vista was good, but most PCs at the time were underpowered and couldn't run Vista (the “Designed for Windows XP/Windows Vista Capable” thing played a huge part). Windows 7 refined Vista, but under the hood it was pretty much the same (the version number was now 6.1 instead of 6.0)

Going by Windows 8.1 basically being Windows 8 SP1, Windows 7.1 already exists (7 SP1).

Windows 7 is busy making Roblox gaming videos and Windows XP is in college. They'll eventually move on to other things than to be installed on billions of computers.

Sweet! Maybe the new Windows team will do a good job ,and make a good OS (This does not include XP or Seven)!
