This button would follow the whole forum of your choice.

Pros
  • This would help you stay tuned to that forum and eliminate the tediousness of checking that forum every 5 minutes to see if there are any new posts.
Cons
  • Too much spam?
That's why you should be wise on which topic(s) you follow. For instance, suggestions would be a no-go. Though, all the language forums and new scratchers could be something you follow.

Could be what it looks like:

yes, I know. bad mockup but I couldn't use inspect(?) because I'm on a school computer right now >:)

Definitely would be too much spam. I wouldn't care if this were implemented, but why? This would probably be like the “see unanswered posts” and “see latest posts” button, in my opinion.

I mean, to be fair, I don't think that's how the existing “Follow Discussion” button works. From what I can tell, I do not get one notification for every post made on a topic I follow. If someone makes a new post, I will usually get a notification, and then never get a notification again, until I actually view the topic and then someone makes a new post.

So, if this suggestion works at all like the existing “Follow Discussion” button works, then I could see this working without much spam.

But at that point it would practically just be a “give me a constant notification” button, especially if you choose a particularly active subforum. As soon as you click on the notification it will get cleared, and then almost immediately get added again.
I was thinking about suggesting this yesterday but I changed my mind. It's not that hard to check on the subforum and notification spam would be a huge problem (
“hey, there's a new post in QaS! lemme check it out!”
*answers question*
*leaves subforum*
“oh, there's a new post!”
*repeats cycle*
) so no support.
No support, there would be too much spam. People would just necropost and spam random stuff.

Support if its like the current “Follow Discussion” button, maybe it'll be like:
https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/1/unread/
and it will only work if new posts are created, not posted on. Thats why the “Follow Discussion” button exists, so you can follow a topic on a forum.
For the Mock-Up, replace “posts” with “topics”
This will combat the “necropost and spam” issue that GIS brought up.
Why would you want to do this? Just check on the forum every once in a while.

It's really painful to occasionally check on a whole subforum for new posts if you really like that subforum eh?

BUMP come on I want this to be added. I just occasionally chest the subforums for new topics and its so painstakingly slow and tedious.

I cant see the mock-up so I'll just go with the one the OP has- unless someone would like to convert it to a Scratch image.

I've read the whole topic before now, but I think I missed this part, because I was thinking about this yesterday night and came up with the same idea :P I also like the url, and the position of the button in this mockup:

Steve0Greatness wrote:

The follow button should probably be at both the top and the bottom of the page if it wants to be consistent with the one for topics.

About where the url would take you, I think it would probably take you to a new page titled "Unread Topics in [Forum Name]", with all the new topics you haven't seen that were created since the last followed forum message. Then you can click on them and check them all out. If not this, then it would probably redirect you to the page with the oldest new topic, where you would still have to find it yourself… or there could be a new indicator for this…?
short: what the url would take you to is not yet clear.

I think it should open the page with the oldest new topic and highlight it.
Support.
I like to keep up to date on the forums and pressing show new posts since last visit just isn't good enough for me.

Thats what it does I'm pretty sure. You can individually follow a topic to get notified of posts.

Happens to me sometimes. Do something else to fill your time. It won't be long when a new post pops up, so be patient.

How about you get one message per 5 activities in that forum? 1:5 Now you might say “what's the difference than just reloading the page in a few minutes?” Well, it's better than just camping that forum.
TBH, the only use this has is the announcements forum(at least for me), because it's not like forumers are on the homepage all day, reloading the page.

You also make like 3 times as many posts as they do when you're just in suggestions
